2018 Pinot Noir Cardiac Hill
The 2018 Pinot Noir Cardiac Hill is a striking expression of Kramer Vineyards’ most dramatic and challenging vineyard site. Sourced from a one-acre block planted in 1995 on the steepest slopes of our estate vineyard, this limited-production wine reflects the rugged beauty and unique terroir of Oregon’s Yamhill-Carlton AVA. With only 175 cases produced, this is a rare opportunity to enjoy a Pinot Noir that truly embodies the concept of "vineyard character."
Deep garnet in color, this wine opens with captivating aromas of black raspberries, forest floor, and cola, accented by a hint of violet. On the palate, flavors of dark cherries, blackberries, and juicy black raspberries are beautifully complemented by earthy undertones and a touch of spice. The medium body and structured tannins provide a balanced framework, leading to a long, satisfying finish.
The vines at Cardiac Hill are planted with Pommard and Dijon 115 clones at an elevation of 725 feet, in soils with distinctive clay ribbons that increase vine stress. This combination of factors leads to lower yields and intensely flavored fruit. The grapes were harvested by hand, with 50% of the clusters destemmed and the rest left whole. After a six-day cold soak, fermentation began, with daily pump-overs and punch-downs to extract flavor and structure. The wine was aged for 18 months in 20% new French oak barrels, adding layers of depth and finesse.
Pair the 2018 Pinot Noir Cardiac Hill with herb-crusted lamb, wild mushroom risotto, roasted duck, or braised short ribs for an unforgettable meal. Its structured profile also makes it an excellent match for aged cheeses such as Gruyère or Manchego. Serve slightly chilled at 55–60°F to fully appreciate its elegant complexity.
